When was Dr. Nihar Munsi Eye. Foundation established?

The foundation was established in 1993, by founder Capt. Prabir Kumar Munshi, the son of legendary eye surgeon, Dr Nihar Munsi. For over thirty years, the institution has kept alive his legacy to serve affordable eye care in Kolkata and Eastern India. The non profit organization, a specialised eye care centre for all kinds of treatment and surgeries, is acknowledged as a premier eye hospital in Eastern India.

Who is Dr. Nihar Munsi?

Born in 1903, in the Tangail district of Bangladesh, Dr. Nihar Munsi secured his MB from R G Kar Medical College in 1922, and onward to DOMS in the UK where he practiced for a few years. He returned to India and started working at R G Kar as a junior surgeon in the Eye Department, eventually earning his way up to the head of the Department in 1952.

Dr. Nihar Munsi was one of the most reputable eye surgeons of Eastern India. His accolades comprise of Head of Ophthalmology at University College of Medicine, Kolkata, Chairman of M N Chatterjee Memorials Eye Hospital, Honorary Head of Department, CMRI, Head of Dept. Of Ophthalmology, Ramkrishna Mission Seva Prathistan from its inception.

Perhaps the strongest tale that still continues today is his combination of professional skills and humanitarian bent. His patients were never turned back, in spite of no funds. Some came with fruits from their land , or fish from their local ponds, as a token of gratitude for service as they were always accepted with grace. Today he is no more, but his legacy is the backbone of the foundation’s work and an inspiration for a large part of the Kolkata Community.
