REACHING OUT TO THE RURAL POOR AND THE NEEDY
The largest percentage of blindness in India comes from cataract. An over mature cataracted lens may leak or burst in the eye to cause permanent blindness. Neglecting a cataract due to financial disability or negligence can lead to blindness.
Dr. Nihar Munsi Eye Foundation has been engaged since 1998 , in an ongoing Community Ophthalmology Programme, which involves creating awareness regarding blindness due to cataract related complications and reaching out to the rural poor and the needy with eye / cataract detection camps followed by free IOL Microsurgery camps at the foundation’s city center.
Through our Community Ophthalmology Programme, the Foundation has so far conducted over 7000 such free IOL Microsurgeries and plans to double the figure in the near future
METHODOLOGY
- We tie up with a local social service organizations/NGO for Cataract Detection Camps in the rural areas outside the city followed by Free IOL Microsurgery camps in the Foundation’s premises.
- Volunteers’ orientation programme at the Foundation for preliminary detection of Cataract afflicted patients.
- Cataract Detection Camps conducted by the medical team of the Foundation for selection of patients in the rural areas outside the city.
- The selected patients are then brought to the Foundation on a given date
- Pre-operative investigations are held at the Foundation’s premises the day before surgery
- Free IOL Microsurgeries conducted on patients certified fit by cardiologist at the Foundation.
